I’ve mulled over how to begin this for what feels like an eternity (it’s been like an hour), but at this point in my career, I've realized how much time is wasted by waiting for everything to feel ~perfect~ before unveiling a project, statement, or intention of mine.
Granted, the past seven years in the film industry — let alone the world — haven’t exactly been the most…“controlled”, and I am not someone who just likes to casually put things out there. Many pathways in the pursuit of finding a moral outlet for my work to stand on have been blurred, eschewed, or gone astray since 2017. On top of that, learning how to be physically, mentally, and spiritually self-sustaining in one of the more costly cities of the world has been nothing short of a chaotic trial and error.
But the beauty of perseverance, no matter what the context, is clarity. My persistence has not only instilled an unyielding foundation of self-conviction, but has also organically brought me back to my initial purpose of authentic storytelling — now, with comfort and stability in who I am, what I stand for, and ultimately what I am capable of.
Hi, my name is Malachi Moore, an independent writer/director of the Black surreal and existentialist genre. I am this and so much more thanks to the pure intentions with which I set out on this journey, and to the community of creatives I’ve subsequently gravitated towards. I owe a great deal to them and to those who’ve come before me that have shared their point of views within their own respective mediums. They have helped shape me and bring me closer to myself, and all I had to do was be open to receiving. Now, it’s my turn to both give back and provide opportunity for others to do the same.
As I embark on the rollout of my very first proof of concept — a project titled DEADENING — I find myself at a pivotal moment between everything that has brought me here and the unknown of what lies ahead. It’s a peculiar…somewhat distressing place to constantly be brought back to, but eventually you come to the realization that this very uncertainty is the catalyst for growth and creativity. What once seemed daunting and unfamiliar becomes a companion on your path, guiding you towards newfound clarity and inspiration. Ultimately, you discover that embracing the unknown is the key that unlocks the doors to boundless possibilities and untapped potential.
With that said, my goal for this blog is to be a source of transparency about the journey of independent filmmaking while holding myself accontable to embracing the unknown. By sharing my own experiences so far, I’m hoping that I can not only encourage others in offering the profound truths and wisdom I've encountered, but demonstrate how they can apply to both filmmaking and to everyday life as well.
There are a few truths in particular I’d like to end on, but first want to thank you for reading and being open to following my journey. I hope you’ll subscribe or check-in from time to time, now considering that:
You do not have to have everything ready to start something new, because you never will.
You will acquire and discover what you need along the way, but this almost always looks like being vulnerable or “failing”. You’ll need to get comfortable with both.
There is no "normal" route. Consider the quickest way to your desired outcome is to accept the path that you’re on and to not compare it to others.
The key to creating something truly unique and authentic — and therefore something that has never been seen or done before — is to have unshakeable, unwavering, tenacious FAITH!
“but eventually you come to the realization that this very uncertainty is the catalyst for growth and creativity.” EXACTLY. And that is why it can be so frightening and brave to put the work out there. So happy to see you on Substack!
